Product description Petzl Stop Descender

The Petzl Stop descender is designed for long single rope descents mainly in caving. A venerable classic among descenders. When the handle is released, the descender brakes. The descent is controlled by varying your grip on the free end of the rope. The handle is used only to un-jam, the rope and allow it to slide through the device. Thanks to the safety catch, you can install the rope with ease without having to unclip the descender from the harness.

  • For use on single rope from 9 - 12mm diameter.
  • The braking bobbins are replaceable.
  • Weight 326gr.

Flawed
Have used this descender extensivley on caving trips and the friction control afforded by the control handle is excellent - BUT the flaw is simply this - Under a 'Panic' situation the natural response is to grip the control handle tighter which of course will accelerate descent - letting go of everything is not the first instinct.

Solid Descender, but be careful
The Stop Descender is the best way to go really, it's solidly built and can be easily repaired if damaged/worn. It is a little expensive, but the addition of the so called "panic brake" is worth it.
But as the other reviewer has stated, this doesn't make this device flawless. I've watched someone drop a good 5m because they let go of the deadrope and were too panicked to let go of the brake (which is a good way to temporarily stop a fall) The impulse in a fall is to grab everything tightly, which is counter to how this device is designed.
The brake is there for if you are incapacitated, you should simply hang there (or very slowly descend, depending upon your weight and the weight of the rope below you). It is NOT a safety net for beginners.
